Meet The Staff
Dr. Mike Shumate has taught in the Department of Leadership in Hospitality and Leisure at California State
University East Bay for the past 20 years and specializes in experiential education and leadership development.
Mike’s experience taking students of all ages, genders, cultural and ethnic backgrounds on adventure trips is
unrivaled in the San Francisco Bay Area. Experiential education is a most powerful tool that allows genuine
learning to occur.
Dr. Shumate’s interest in organizational development while pursuing his doctorate at Golden Gate University led
him to discover the value of cooperating in the workplace. Conventional management theory suggests that
competition is what drives American Corporations to be successful. Dr. Shumate believes just the opposite, it is
only through genuine trust, cooperation and teamwork among workers can organizations thrive and change with
the demands of today’s competitive marketplace.
Since 1992, Dr. Shumate has facilitated hundreds of corporate team-building events. His client list includes
companies such as Microsoft, Sun Micro Systems, Flextronics, IDT, City of Walnut Creek, Menlo College, Holy
Names University and many others.
In 1991, Mike founded the Center for Adventure Recreation a non-profit organization aimed at developing
leadership, communication, trust, respect and teamwork among the San Francisco’s Bay Area urban youth-at-
risk. Using the Adventure Challenge Course facility he built at California State University East Bay, thousands of
young people have successfully completed the program’s objectives. The Adventure Challenge Course has
been featured on Kron 4, and all the major San Francisco Bay Area Newspapers on numerous occasions.
Mike's passion and purpose is to share his knowledge, experience and expertise with clients of all ages and
backgrounds to create programs that make a difference on a personal and organizational level.
Since 1992, the Adventure Challenge Course at
California State University East Bay has offered
team-building and leadership training programs for
non-profit, education and corporate groups through out
the San Francisco Bay Area. Located in a beautiful
outdoor setting behind the campus, our site overlooks the
entire Bay Area and Silicon Valley. Our ropes course
features low and high elements and various initiatives
that are designed to develop teamwork, problem solving
and leadership skills using a fun nonthreatening
"challenge by choice approach."
Dr. Mike Shumate designed and built the Adventure
Challenge Course himself and is the lead facilitator with
over 20 years of experience in leadership training and
teaching experiential education.
Successful team building events should carry over into
the office and demonstrate organizational efficiency and
effectiveness. With the guidance of Dr. Shumate and his
highly trained staff facilitating you can be assured that
your time and effort is well spent.
